Customer lifetime value calculator

See what one new customer or client is worth to your business, in sales, over 1 year and over the years they keep coming back.

What's one customer worth to you?

Try sample numbers:

Sample numbers to show how it works, not industry averages. Use your own.

One customer is worth about:

$600in sales in 1 year

$3,000in sales over 5 years

The second total is their customer lifetime value: what one customer is worth in sales, if they keep coming back at that rate.

How it's figured

Three numbers, multiplied.

Customer lifetime value is the total one customer spends with your business over the whole time they keep coming back. This calculator works it out in sales.

  1. Average sale

What a customer spends per visit or job. Take one month's sales and divide by the number of visits or jobs that month. Your booking system, register or invoices will have both.

  2. × Visits per year

How often a regular comes back. Every 3 weeks is about 17 a year, monthly is 12, every 3 months is 4, and twice a year is 2.

  3. × Years they stay

How long your regulars usually keep coming. Not sure? Try 3 years, then 5, and see the range.

= Customer lifetime value, in sales. Average sale × visits per year gives you the 1-year total. Multiply by years for the lifetime total.

Is this sales or profit?

Sales. To estimate profit, multiply the total by your profit margin. For example, at a 30% margin, $3,000 in sales is about $900 in profit.

Does it work for clients, patients or members?

Yes. The math is the same whether you call them customers, clients, patients or members.

What if my customers come back at different rates?

Run it twice: once for your regulars and once for one-time customers. The gap between the two shows what it's worth to turn a one-time customer into a regular.

Why does this number matter?

It shows what one customer is worth over time, not just the sale in front of you. That helps you weigh what's worth doing to win new customers and keep the ones you have.

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

No. The math runs in your browser, and nothing you type into the calculator is saved or sent.
